Has anyone killed a tagged animal on farm,do you have to inform the Department of Agriculture, if so is there any forms to fill in.

I kill my own pigs and sheep but as we don't keep cattle anymore I don't do that. I did once kill a young hefer (quite delicious baby beef) but since the regulations covering TSE (see mad cow desease) came in I'd say it's impossible to home kill any age of cattle and stay within the law. As sheep and pigs don't have their own 'passports' you can get around the disposal issue - especially if you have dogs.

The min of ag would say no way to any home kill. Apparently you can kill a pig but the loophole is buried deep in the paper work somewhere. If anyone knows where it is I for one would be interested. Wink

Do the department know and accept that you home kill,do you put it in the register as home kill,have you had any problems from anyone.

I put down home kill on the flock register - when I can be bothered to fill it in. I've never been asked to show my register so don't know what they'd say and really don't care - my family are the only ones who eat it and it's none of their business. But like evertything, if you want to report yourself to the department you're inviting shite.

I have had an inspection a couple of times now from an environmental health inspector because I am selling factory killed meat (pigs). she checks my logs, and the hygiene side and any broken carcases in the chiller and she has only been a pleasure to deal with - very helpful and encouraging.

For squirrel - dogs will eat the less than choice bits.

I don't really think they could do anything about it when they find out,I have four pigs in the register down as home kill,and one heifer lost missing in action,would it be worth the effort of the department taking anyone to court over a home kill.

The tags I got for my pigs are not sequentially numbered ( only show my herd number ) so I am not sure how anyone would know whether I had killed a bonham while it was still on my farm .
Perhaps from inspection of the Farm Record of number of animals you are supposed to fill in at the end of each month ?
