I'm looking for a bit of help/advice from the locals. I have visitors coming again shortly (sigh) and need to find a place to fish and catch something for once. Actually its getting a bit embarrasing - I've taken people out to the Moy and to a few of the loughs around here (Charlestown) and apart from the odd tiny trout, parr or perch we have usually blanked. While I can take it these people have been fed on a sky fishing channel diet full of praise for fishing in Ireland - you and I know that this stuff is completely contrived but I think they're beginning to think I'm an idiot (I've had my doubts for years). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wouldn't call you an idiot under any circumstances  Wink .
I am not an expert but can say that most of the brown trout in the lakes and rivers around here are no more than 6" long . I have heard of bigger ( to 2 lb ) but never met anyone who could look me in the eye and say he actually caught one in the recent past .
There are certainly plenty of salmon in the upper reaches of the Moy and its tributaries at the right time of year . I am not sure when that is -- don't think right now . They spawn in good numbers just downstream of us but the river would be very difficult to fish due to rocks and current .
I have reliable reports of decent pike in the water to the west of Ballymote , and in the Moy up by Tubbercurry . A young lad who I have no reason to doubt claims to have caught a 32 pounder in a lake not far from here but I had nothing when I rushed off down there .
Apparently good catches of Sea Trout on sandeel from the shore in Ballysadaire bay but if I could guarantee the reports I would be down there myself right now !
I think you have my phone number . Please feel free to call and I will be happy to tell you what I can .  Wink

Hi Blowin. I've actually got some frozen sandeel so we'll give that a go - if it's a nice day it really doesn't matter if you catch anything - you can't beat the coast for entertaining kids.
I have lost your number but thanks for your reply - you're a gent.

I will pm my phone nbr to you . If you haven't got it by the time you read this post I have been distracted and forgotten so please phone me ...........
You are of course aware that you need a licence to fish for salmonoids ( salmon / trout ) even in the open sea and there are strict catch limits . Fine chance !!
Similar techniques of drifting sandeel are used for bass .
Talk soon .
