I seem to remember there was an old post about a midge hoover.

Does anyone have the details of a supplier and, perhaps more importantly, do they work?

Hi Graney ,
The machine I use is made by Texol and called "Midge-It" . The original distributor has retired but I think these guys have taken over :
Oysterbed Solutions    087 621 3824   /   www.oysterbed.ie    /   midgemagic@oysterbed.ie

Mine is an early model and there seemed to be quite a bit of misleading advertising in the industry when I first looked into it so it might be worth shopping around .
Main lesson I learned is that you want a MIDGE trap , not one which is designed more for mosquitoes , and the size ( and therefore price ) does not necessarily make much difference to catching power .
Monthly running costs are about 30 euro  for a cannister of gas plus another 10 for the pheronome . Certainly not cheap and they won't eliminate all the midge but can make a huge difference -- as in making it tolerable rather than an absolute nightmare to step outside the door .
There are a couple of other considerations . Please feel free to pm me with your phone number if you would like me to ramble on about them
