why do we not have our own pig association in ireland, for registration of pure breds born here, has anyone ever tried to form such an organization, i think it would be great idea, im only really new to pig keeping and dont no know why we have to rely on the british pig association for pure breds born here.

It may be useful to have an Irish society that is affiliated to the BPA and the other breed societies but if the motive for forming an Irish assoc' was based on some nationalistic principle then I would not be in favour.
The BPA do an excellent job for their members regardless of which side of the channel they are based and it's thanks to their members and the forerunner, the NPBA, that we can enjoy many if not most of the breeds we have today.
Having seen the mess that the Connemara Pony breeders society has got itself and the breed into it's obvious that maintaining and monitoring standards is not easy. The 'Connemara' today, infused with all sorts of foreign blood is hardly recognisable to what it was only 40 years ago. |

I think a pig society is long overdue. We smallholders and back-garden pig keepers could do with a body to speak up against bureaucracy. It's a wonder we haven't been banned over this 'pig' flu.
I know this is a different idea from the a breed association but the body I envisage could campaign for, or organise, home-kill and processing, help with sourcing supplies, weaners etc and provide advice to new-comers.
I even thought of a name - Muintir na Muice - the pig people.
