Reputededly the ex-pats bible , Saudi , some years ago . Never tried it myself of course and my friend Admin will be duty bound to point out that this forum doesn't advocate breaking the law in any way so please don't try it at home .

Just as a matter of interest , what were the old ways of producing this raw spirit then making sure that you saved only the right type of alcohol ?

The colour of the flame is indicative .
So is the viscosity of the spirit but it surprised me to be told that the sample which left a clear but oily smear on the inside of the glass was superior to the one which didn't . Similarly the good potch drips in an oily sort of way . Not much different to water but still noticeably so . That is counter-intuitive to me and I don't know whether it was good advice but I don't remember spitting the sample into the sink Laughing

It was apparently a strong superstion that the first jugfull out of the still should be given to the Faeries . You would suffer if you didn't . Not only a nice ritual but that makes a lot of sense since the first distillate would be closer to paint-stripper than scotch Laughing

Indeed, we must not forget the Faeries share. Freezing a fruit wine and throwing away the ice works well.

Recently got back from a few days visiting near Clifden and after putting the word around that I was after a drop was introduced to a man who is running an old brandy still - a beautiful piece of craftmanship. I know you hear horror stories but you could eat your dinner off the floor in his shed. He's an ex master distiller for one of the norths biggest and makes top class poteen, excellent whiskey and occasionally good brandy. All double distilled through a huge copper reflux column, I drank more than my quota over the my stay and woke up without a twinge.
I think I'll be going back as soon as... :wink:
