Hi !
Does anyone have a cure for ringworm?
We purchased a calf a week ago and it has the symptoms. The vet says they do not have anything for it as it will clear on its own! We have her seperated from the other cattle and one suggestion we have had is to put old engine oil on it.
Anyone know any more about this? I know we can get it as well and it is a fungal contamination, but wondered if someone had any other info. Thanks. Confused

Hi Tina, I don't have any personal experience but have been doing a bit of googling . HTH Wink
Extract from http://cattletoday.info/ringworm.htm
Ringworm will usually cure itself without treatment. Common treatments include topical application of a 2% solution of iodine, thiabendazole paste or any fungicide used to treat athlete's foot in man.

I have heard that a mixture of Cider Vinigar and Boric Acid from the chemist rubbed in to the area a few times will do the trick. Mind you dont get it mate Wink

We had ringworm in goats...treated them by rubbing with cheap malt vinegar. The ringworm disappeared very quickly. Not sure if it disappeared spontaneously (perhaps the ringworm was on the way out), but it certainly looked like vinegar had a major effect...all 3 goats cured after 4 treatments, every other day.

Like Wayland says, mind you don't get it...we used thick rubber gloves when rubbing the vinegar on just in case...be careful of any small cuts, as I think it gains access through minor skin abrasions.

Good luck

David

Thanks very much for your help everyone.
I especially like the idea of the vinegar, something nice and cheap for a change. I'll give it a go and will let you know.
Also thanks for the advice about the gloves . Wink

Hi Tina,

I was reading yesterday in my Herbal book for farm animals that the juice of a freshly squizzed lemon should do the trick on ringworm.

It will dry off and make a protective coat around it ..

I'll double check how often you should apply it because I forgot ..

PS: did the cow calf yet now that Raymond is gone ? Laughing

Yes of course it did .
She went ahead yesterday morning while I was next door babysitting. I looked at her when I left the house at 8 and she was fine.
The girls and I came back at 10:30 just to feed the lambs and check on the cow. There she was , with her new calf, not long born as she was still cleaning it.
only problem was she calved in the yard in the rain and in the crap. Have had to tube feed the calf twice and put it under the lamp because he was perished.
He is well enough now but he is a BIG SOFT CALF and has to be encouraged to stand and will not suck.
Have had tyo milk the cow to feed him so far, but we got something from the vet to encourage appetite so have locked mother and calf in the shed and hope he will get up and suck. COME BACK RAYMOND !!!!!

sorry for the long reply. Rolling Eyes

Hi everyone its a while since I last posted anything, lots happening.!

I tried the vinegar on the calf and it seemed to do the job. My mother found an old tube of anti fungal cream that she had not finished, so I used this 3 times and each time I smothered the area with vaseline.

Hey presto no more ringworm!!

Many thanks for all your help.

Tina Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
