Not something I make a point of looking for but this year I've come across 3 bumble bee nests. One under a pallet at the bottom of a woodpile, one in an old barn wall and the third in the insulation around an oil burner. Previously I've only found one every couple of years. I understand the species is in general decline so it's nice to see them doing well here. I hope my recent destruction of thistles hasn't deprived them of an essential food source. Fortunately there is a lot of Fireweed in bloom in places I have let go wild .

Would that be considered a wild bee colony? Was talking to the local beekeeping man, and according to him, there were no more wild Irish bees that he knew of.

3 nests of bees, I'd get wildly excited by that !

No, he's talking about wild colonies of honeybees. There are plenty of bumblebees still.
