I have been watching the progress of the five baby swallows which are in the nestbox I put up in the porch outside my front door.  I am astonished at the rate of growth these nestlings have achieved.  And there parents have fed them on nothing but flies!  I have a good mind to give up my diet of steak and eggs and go on flies!  - or maybe not.....

I've heard it reported that with the growing population and pressure on farm land we'll all be eating insects instead of steak in the not too distant future .
I don't find that idea repulsive but admit that I haven't intentionally eaten any type of insect to date. Do you know whether any of the ones we find over here have any culinary value ?   That is worth a topic of its own. I've started one here  http://countrytalkandtips.myfreeforum.org/about5077.html&highlight=

What sort of nestbox did you use, Sean?

I feel guilty this year, as the swallows that previously nested in our house, are homeless

Here's a couple of photos - sorry, quality not great, but they're in the shade.  They're  just a simple flat board supported by a couple of brackets with a bit of plastic tacked on the front.

I also hung up a couple of perches which the young swallows use when they fledge.  I'll try to get a photo of them  - they should fledge in a few days' time.

Brilliant thankyou.

I'll have a go

I feel the need to make up for taking away their house that they've nested in the last 30 years.
