Can you tether sheep as you would goats ?
I have an area of grass which I want to keep short . I don't want to use goats because they are just too destructive when they get loose , as they invariably do . Fencing would be inappropriate , hence the question .

An old lady in our village used to do it on the village green when I was a lad. We used to get a bit of pocket money for keeping an eye on it _________________ Leave not a trace. |

No particular problems , then ?
I don't really expect any -- just wondered why I have never seen it done . |

No offence, blowin, but I wouldn't tether goats, not regularly or for prolonged periods anyway, and especially not out in the rain (they don't have a fine wooly water-repellent undercoat like sheep do and chill easily).
Prolonged tethering is also prohibited under organic regulations as it is not ethologically sound.
Have you considered electric netting? It allows the animal to move freely within a given area, is easily moved and can be set up to have even odd shaped corners grazed down.

No problem , Chook , I don't keep goats precisely because I don't want to tether them ( tho' I think they are hardy enough as long as they have some shelter ) .
I just don't trust them with electric strands , either , and I'm afraid the netting wouldn't look right in the intended area tho' it was a good thought .
If I use sheep I can let them loose in the other field as soon as they have done their job in the garden area .
And I would use 2 at a time , so they don't get lonely
then I will eat them

I have a friend who has a couple of tethered sheep, he has no problems but he reared them from lambs,
