I am pretty sure that Spider crabs should be moving close in about now but I don't know of anyone who has intentionally caught them . In some areas of the S of england they can apparently be taken from the shore with a big bait on a crab line . I think you'd be more likely to catch an angry conger over here but have you tried it ?

On the north Norfolk coast beach fisherman are plagued with the brown crab at certain times of the year, with them not only eating our bait but also eating any fish that we had hooked unknowingly. The problem is that they almost always get off in the breakers. That was untill we made a crab rig which consisted of a large baited hook surrounded with many loops of shock leader. It got them tangled a treat. This might work on the spider crabs.

So , do they come inshore around here ( Sligo /Mayo ) ? Apparently the lobster potting boys come across small ones from time to time but have no interest in them so perhaps don't notice whether or not they are here in sufficient numbers to make it worth trying for them off the pier ?
Come to think of it the larger ones would not be able to get into a lobster pot anyway .
