Apparently the renowned John Seymore - Self Sufficiency book recommends that freshly cut / green Ash should be immersed in water for a couple of days . This drives out the sap and makes the wood burn hotter .
That is counter - intuitive to me .
Does anyone know of or about this recommendation ?

http://www.bio.net/bionet/mm/ag-forst/1998-January/007939.html dont think it answers your question though, and for those that have wondered what different woods smell like when burning http://extension.usu.edu/forestry/HomeTown/General_HeatingWithWood.htm

Ash is the absolute queen of the woods in regard to burning. Green or dry. JS <my hero bless him> knows alot of stuff but I have never had probs with green ash. Burns with a lovely smell too. Wink

Cool . Thanks for the input confirming that it is not common practice .
The Q then is why JS would have put that in his book ( assuming that he really did -- I was told but haven't seen for myself ) ?
A wry sense of humour and a simple test to see whether common sense would prevail ? I could empathise with that Wink Laughing
Or , as a mate suggested -- it might give some marginal improvement to the burning quality and JS would be enough of a purist to do it for that reason . The rest of us wouldn't bother because it is great as it comes , anyway .

Not to mention that " living from one acre " map of his ! But I digress .
