Just an observation really , possibly a caveat too !
If you are thinking of raising a stud for a species which may be common enough in the uk but isn't here , bear in mind that he may soon be out of work !
I know someone , as they say , who bought an expensive pedigree dog ( male ) and went to the expense etc of taking it to shows in order to increase his value as a stud . The first mating would cover the cost of the dog , anything after that would be a very handy profit ( because he is primarily intended as a pet / guard dog anyway ) .
The first mating went wonderfully well ( 12 pups I think it was ) . That was to a bitch from the north . As far as I can see it will be his last because all the others of his kind on this island are too closely related to him .
I can see this happening with local populations of rare breed pigs if we aren't careful but I don't think there is an easy answer -- unless we eat them all !
