Other peoples' sheep wandering onto the veg patch is sometimes an issue around here . This is normally sorted out in a friendly manner but I was wondering what the law actually says . I can't find anything relevant to the ROI but this link gives the position in England http://www.webtribe.net/~shg/Animals%20Act%201971%20(1971%20c%2022).htm

If anyone has the time and knowledge to comment on how similar the law is in Ireland that would be great .
But more specifically , who is liable if you hit one of those bloomin sheep which sleep at the side of the unfenced mountain roads ?

I think it's the animal owner. I remember someone telling me that they were trying to return a horse to a travellers site, and none of the travelllers would admit it was theirs in case it had done something wrong! (It was very clearly theirs so the person in the end tied it up at the gate and left it, and it was goen again when they next went past that way...)

I shut three escaped horses onto our land in Waterford as they were racing down the main road one day, and the bloke was really eager to hyelp with any damage they'd done on our lawn (it was quite a big lawn, and they seemed to think it was fun to gallop up and down it.) I think everyone, including us, were just glad that they hadn't hurt anyone or themselves, but I think the bloke was also aware that they could have cost him a fortune if they'd caused an accident.

any damage to the car?

I did find out that if someone else's dog damages your veg patch they are liable, and that was useful to yell a few years ago although it never kept that particular dog out. still, it's been run over now, poor thing.

I now understand why many properties around me have cattle grids at their drive ways. Good idea me thinks. Wink
