Hi wayland,
I don't think maize and barley are sufficient for chicks, especially at this time of the year when there are no bugs etc. about. They should have about 20% protein. Grains and maize have about half that. If you can't find chick crumb you can add boiled egg or yoghurt, sesame seeds, ground hempseeds, brewer's yeast etc. to up the protein level. But any agricultural supplier that gets Redmills feeds should be able to get the organic chickcrumb as well since Redmills has taken over the deliveries of Morrins organic livestock feeds.

Hi chook. Thanks for that. I asked at the local Glanbia store and they stocked no chook feed at all. So for the time being I will plan for your other options. Monday is the big day I hope.
Cheers. _________________ Leave not a trace. |

Hi there,
I haven't tried fostering any, but I did give some 3/4 incubated eggs to a hen once, so she only sat for 3/4 days and hatched .. and she wasn't bothered at all ..
and the soya meal for protein is good I think ... and it doesn't say that it comes from GM stuff ... so can I take for granted that they are not ?
and the boiled eggs are good for calcium too if you crush the shell with the eggs .. and you should have some sand in the mix too ...

I think if anything I think it's the opposite - unless it specifically states that it's non-GM you can assume there is some in there. Have no proof of this, just a hazy memory of a talk on GM feed at the Irish Green Gathering last year. _________________ http://livingthesimplelifeiwant.blogspot.com |

I will have to look further afield then. Wicklow is just next door. Can you be a bit more specific please.

Its the one in Ashford, just off the N11 near Wicklow town. I'm sure you or someone you know drives the N11 to Dublin every now and then?
