That's really awful, Camile.

Can't offer any practical help I'm afraid. Don't think our 3-month old beagle pup would be much use to you.

I hope you're successful in your hunt.

We were thinking of getting chooks next year, but it makes me wonder whether its worth it.

Foxes are all a part of country living and clearly this one has to go. It is usually a vixen that has hungry cubs that will risk a hunt near humans by day. I would never want to kill all foxes but to protect my birds anything goes. Go get it Camile. Wink

still didn't get the "%$&"$ ... Evil or Very Mad

I spotted him a couple of days ago, and a friend with a gun arrived 2mn after that ..

went in the field, shot at him twice but the chap missed  Rolling Eyes ..

result -> angry fox had one of my guinea fowl the next night/morning ...

but a local chap is coming over the weekend to sort him out, he's the man to have around for vermin control. he's got a good reputation and good dogs .. so fingers crossed ...

I am the same as you wayland, wouldn't kill them if they weren't killing my birds...

Camile

Mother hen and the last remaining 5 chicks disappeared Thurs night . Don't know whether fox or feral cat .
What do you do ? I will continue with free range during the day and in the house at night but losses have been high this year . Not going to get any more until the Spring and then I think I'll go for hens that can fly up into the barn and keep just a few broilers fully caged .

I have seen Foxes locally at night but not here. The local hunt is quite active in these parts. I close my birds up at night but if charlie comes in the day then I will have losses of course. Being active on the land through the day must be a deterrent and having dogs too. Fingers crossed.

Our dog (Springer Spaniel) has just finished his chicken training and is now hen safe!

Do you think I can go back to free ranging my hens now that the dog is close? Would he keep the fox away, do you think?!
