I was just reading about taking fuscia cuttings, and wondering what your opinions are on doing so?
personally, when I'm visiting gardens, like bit castle gardens, or generally huge places, I might, accidently, you know, just happen to go home with a few sticks, or seeds in my pocket. (there's a lovely dog wood growing here now, that might have originated from Blarney castel gardens...
obviously this is wrong, and stealing, and so on, but I tend to think that in huge places, with a healthy plant that is big enough, I am not doing any harm. (have also been known to brush past the odd shrub in a car park, or return from eating in an outside cafe with a snippet of a climber...) I'm not taking cuttings from people's gardens without asking them. (oh, just rememebred where the latest batch of fushia cuttings came from, but they were out and they'd never notice...)
does this make me a terrible person?
i don't think so, maybe it's the devil on my shoulder, holding the sacateurs.

Yes it does!!! along with the rest of us. It can never be right can it? There was a large statley house near by which had a fantastic shrubby tree thing growing. It was said to be the only one in the country. One winter it died and an appeal went out world wide for a replacement. The head gardener was very glad to get his replacement from three miles away

I not only have to dodge head gardeners, I also have to avoid the eagle eye of hubby. Not a gardener, he He hisses "you'r gonna get us thrown out" But no ones been bothered yet. and the happyness that a flourishing plant that cost nout is soooooooooo sweet! _________________ The reward for a job well done is more work |

isn't that the truth!
my dad is as bad as I am, and when Mum took us to Lismore Castle gardens, she was taking a photo of a long bed of something pretty, to find dad snipping at one end, and me at the other! I love the photo. she got quite cross with us, as in a pub, over lunch, all we did is compare seeds and things from our pockets. _________________ manure happens |

I think providing the visual display is not harmed in any way no one will notice. Its still wrong though. Perhaps we should set up a cutting exchange section. I have a number of likely looking blue berries on the go at the moment. _________________ Leave not a trace. |

I have no shame when it comes to taking cuttings one sunday morning after i took er indoors to work i pulled over outside this house and took some golden conifer cuttings, it seems that they are all doing well ...........................it was an abandend house so i figured they wont miss a branch or 2, being on a new site exposed to the elements i need lots of shelter,
i purchased 100 lawsons cypress from a guy in the buy and sell for 160.00 euro and ended up with 170 plants 2 - 3 foot tall, he did say that he was going to put a few more in but i expected 5 or so more, will deffo buy from him again,
just picked up a load more trees from mid west forestry at 50c each between 50 - 100 cm, bargain
What i dont use i can always re sell later
If theres a bargain to be had i'll find it _________________ The Magic Seeder Makes Seed Sowing Simple 20% discount to members of this forum

Mum and I share cuttings across the big pond (hubby cringes) but it works a treat. Just put a little bit of wet polly roll in with them and no return address. Havnt lost one yet The thing that drives me nuts is that garden catologs wont post to me. Whats the point of having these wonderfull things on mail order and not sending them to Ireland. ERRRRRRRRRRRRR Finding neet things on internet and not being to get them is anoying to say the least, esp when its something that I simply cant get over here. like Scupernongs (a cultivated wild grape from the southern US) No one over here has even heard of them, never mind tasted one and now she has moved north I cant even get her to send me cuttings. Ah well, maybe a few slips might fall into my bags next visit _________________ The reward for a job well done is more work |

GB. Can you get a few grape seeds sent to you? perhaps better than cuttings. Blowin. Perhaps an "Exchange seeds/cuttings" section would fit in the Market Place well enough but, it would be nice to take cash out of the equation. Those that wanted some cash can post on the Market place section. _________________ Leave not a trace. |

Sad to say I have tried seeds several times in every way I can think of, even just letting the fruit rot on the compost but no joy Mum did order one for me from a company that reg sends out undersized plants, figuring that a small plant should sneek past postal people but when it arived it was a monster of a plant It now lives with a family friend who was really happy with it.
