Do we need a street traders licence or something like to sell at Farmers Markets. Perhaps to add value to the produce, selling of hot soup also?

OOhh , better look into that in detail Wayland.
Generaly I believe yes you do need a casual traders licence, however I believe there are certain towns in the country that you may not need one for. There was quite a lot of hooplaa about this a couple of years ago where the cops were stopping people trading but it was found they were doing nothing wrong as there was some old charter or something that allowed it. There may be something about being able to sell your own produce as well(like you can without a licence) but that is just something I have in my head that I heard a long time ago when I was a commercial small boat fisherman.

I was just thinking about this very thing this morning on my way to work. I'm not sure I could ever sell processed food, which I'd say requires a lot of involvement with EU regulations. But extra veg some day maybe. I was also thinking about craftwork and wondering what would be involved there. I think it'd be worth it for me to find out because if I decide not to do it I'd like it to be because I don't want to rather than I just don't know how to get through the "official" parts of licences, taxes etc.

I'll ask around a few of the people at the market on Saturday and see what they say.

As far as a street traders licence for a farmers market. It all depends on who is running it. The KK market is run by the council and a licence is required by them which also includes some insurance and the pitch fee. The Enisscorthy market is run by a Co-op. and they hold the licence but charge their own pitch fee. the Type of produce and how it can be presented is a bit open to debate, but I see meat products in glass cases and bread and cakes etc just piled up on a bench. No dought there is a GOV site somewhere with the rules etc. Wink

How about selling spare chickens? The Bantry market seems to have lots of people selling poultry round the edges and I had thought about joining them this summer with my spare hens but hadnt thought of needing a licence Rolling Eyes

I think that licensing is purely a local thing. The people who run the Mart be it the local authority or private will have their own rules. In regard to selling your chooks GB, if there is already chooks being sold they may not want you to sell there too. The other stall holders may object. Our mart is run by a local farmer and we need his permission to sell certain products. Good luck. Wink

How on earth would you go about finding stuff like that out Shocked  Confused  Short of asking the other merchants is there any other way to find out if I would be welcome with my hens or excess veg?

I know about eggs, its too much hassel to sell them so I just give them to friends and family when they pile up but the other things I would like to sell Very Happy

Hi GB
For Bantry market it always used to be that people just turned up with whatever they've got to sell ..... hens, plants, bits and pieces, whatever... Don't think thats changed, and as far as I know you don't need a license, theres some sort of town charter that covers the market.

The first Friday of every month is the biggest market there but you'd need to get in early to get a good spot. Go for it!

Let me know what you'll be selling (and when) and I'll try and get in and say 'hello'. It would be good to meet someone from on here face to face!  Smile
