I remember our first duck egg. It was blue, and tucked down the edge, and I only found it when cleaning them out. So excited, I ran (Ok, hobbled quickly) up to the house, burst in on Himself who was having a terribly serious conversation on the phone to someone, and said"look, look, it's an egg - they've laid an egg!!" to which he added his excitement, and then examined it, and then remembered he was on the phone...

I don't remember our first chicken egg, but I do resent buying them now. Laughing

Axe?
Sorry.
Swollen, arthritic foot sounds like Rhus tox from Weleda might help. Does wonders with all kinds of joint prob's in humans anyway.

actually yes - what does everyone use for worming, etc, for their chucks? We use garlic at the moment, but we're picking up some more worming powder soon.

Mine get garlic too, a clove in their water at all times and about once a week a good dose in their feed. But I also use Flubenvet twice a year. No withdrawal period for eggs, 8 days or so for meat. I always see production rise somewhat after treatment so I take it that the garlic may help a little (also for general health) but it does not fully prevent worm burden.
I'm always interested in alternatives though.

well, chicken curry is always nice - there'll be one here tonight, too!

a few weeks ago we picked up some eaters, and they have been living in another house, in another enclosure, next to the one our layers live in. After ten days the girls gave up jumping over the fence to steal their food, and made a hole in the chicken wire, so I gave up the seperation thing and opened the gate between them...

there were sulks, and temper tantrums, and a few feathers flying, but eventually they settled down.
until yesterday!
The stinkies - eaters, so named a few years ago, because they do - have staged a coup. they've moved into the girls house, and taken over the main enclosure!

endless hours of fun, watching them.
as it happens it's working fine, as we'll have more baby Stinkies to put in the other place in a few weeks.
