I told him that the run was small and he hasn't an electric fence. I'll make sure to be there myself when she comes for her next visit.
By the way, Dara, all three ladies are thriving - hope that wasn't a secret.

The run could be bigger because we actually have the piggies welfare in mind but the EU guidelines that our dept. of agro so slavishly follow state that commercial pigs each have a dynamic/social space of only 1.9 square metres - so your mates allotment would appear adequate. You should also ask her if pigs in piggeries have a dedicated feed trough each.
Sharp stones - those red eyed piggies you see at the factories never see the light of day for the 5 miserable months they spend josling for some comfort.

Glad the ladies are doing well and no it's not a secret - tell the world - I need to sell more of these happy piggies!

if you can get an electric fencer mains or battery and polly wire, posts ect.=sharp stones sorted
if you can make a seperated area outside this area to isolate any bullied pigs say 4m x 5m added to your main pin and you have two areas of 10 x 5m put a tempary shelter for short term housing  sorted
electric fence will sort the dog problem sorted
a boot washer that will keep water filled with disinfectant bucket near by=sorted

There is a bigger issue here Patmk. If Dept of Ag officials are allowed to change/invent the rules, we are all in trouble.
I suspect that the pig factories have got the ear of the Minister and are complaining about the increase in home pig-keepers.

The amount of Free Range pigs produced in Ireland is insignificant compared to the 'Commercial Industry'.I really think the inspector isn't out to get your friend .There is a chance that the inspector is basing the advice given on personal opinion,a friend of mine applied for her herd number about 2 years ago.She had 2 sizable pens and 2 houses in them, adequate water supply etc. When the inspector saw the setup she was told to put in concrete floors in the houses  Shocked She did this to satisfy the Dept. Inspector .(the pigs slept outside until the floors were gone).I have never heard of this being required in an inspection since then so i suspect that your friend is being subjected to the same personal opinion.

there is 3 wayes to deal with dept trouble
yes sir yes sir and thank you. if this doesnt work
than under what section of which law was this brought into law and does this law conflict with european law or other irish laws.
and can you enforce this law as I think you are braking health and safety laws in that you entered a work area in the line of your work and didnt produice a safe pass and is your shoes safty shoes and can you prove it

Idid it once to a cranky dept person once and when he came back with a garda I asked the garda to ask me in writing to let the dept man on my land while I was concerned with his braking the law the garda told the dept man to leave because the garda he would not give me the letter but I was allowed to ask for the letter so .
the 3rd way didnt use it yet so I dont know

I think macconraoi's right and I don't think this lady is singling your friend out but she has gone beyond the pale. She is a public servant there to enforce the rules - these are not ambiguous - her own opinions, even if they were of merit should not form any part of the agenda.
How would it be if your car could pass the NCT in one place but not another because of the prejudice of an inspector?

My friend has just been approved for a Pig Herd Number. The same inspector called but this time was 'as nice as pie'. He had built a second ark for 'isolating a sick pig' as requested and had done nothing else.

that's mighty, funny thing is freerange pigs rarely get sick.We have never had to isolate any sick pigs.We had a dept inspector here last Tuesday for no other reason but curiosity to be fair. She told me of a Commercial Sow Unit not far from here had a medication bill of 94,000 euro last year alone. This medication finds its way very easily into us with all its repercussions.

The last time I had an inspector here was about 3 years ago . We only had 2 or 3 pigs out in the field and I left him to get on with it . He must have spent an hour doing whatever it takes to inspect an enclosure about 40 yards square with one pig house made out of pallets and bailing plastic . Said they looked very happy and so was he .
Being new to the game I was keen to show that everything was in order . Asked him if he wanted to inspect the paperwork . He had absolutely no interest in that , just the wellbeing of the animals . Perhaps times have changed !
