easy now
Now that you've told me off for my assumptions, obviously you know for a fact that "people on horseback get some sick thrill chasing the poor animal to exhaustion".Now back to the question of which is more humane hunting with dogs or shooting.

I have never been hunting but if those with guns have a good clean shot well then hunting with guns would be less cruel - but it all comes down to the individual actually doing the shooting.

It comes down to their moral behaviour and thats not something that can ever be categorised.

Obviously someone that aims to shoot and kill the animal as quickly as possible inflicts less fear and terror than chasing an animal on horseback- also causes less damage to property, walls, fencing and hedges.

That's the point i am making, not all shooters wait for a clear shot.
I've bolted foxes for guns who shot at them while they are going away with no chance of a clean kill, they might get rolled over but they keep going, then its left to the dogs to find them and put them out of their pain.
People do take snap shots at all types of animals, shooting at things that are out of range in the hope that they hit them, you don't become a marksman over night, it takes a lot of practice and a lot misses and wounded animals before you become proficient. The best shot cant hit the target every time, with dogs you either catch it or you don't

Hello Babylady
Do i take it from your lack of response, that you might have had a change of mind on the humane aspect of hunting with dogs.

I suspect that the translation service might be in order here -- AFAIK the French use the term "hunting" ( Chasseur ?? ) to mean shooting with guns , not hunting with dogs . Just thought I'd mention it to save Camile from the guillotine if this thread gets more heated .
On reflection it might be better to delete what I have just said  Rolling Eyes  Laughing .

Good call Nick, I wasn't in the subject at all ..

I don't know much at all about hunting with dogs .. but if I would assume if it's you and your few dogs, protecting your turf or fetching a few rabbits for the pots .. nothing wrong in that .. after seeing someone's dog follow the scent of a fox .. sounds like a fair battle to me ..

after that, the big organized hunts with all the hounds and all .. to me it's like "kingdomship", a relic of the past that his useless but keeps people entertain,

but it shouldn't be bad as everyone as the right to express themselves somehow .. it's traditions . be it good or bad ..

I just been reading down this interesting topic.  Indeed, i suppose there must be somekind of balance kept, and when it falls out of natures keeping for whatever various reasons, then i nessesary, man may step in.  But, i have seen nature in balance with my own eyes, in this example ; i've watch Rabbits and Fox cubs sitting, grazing, playing, within yards of each other.- Sure its a different story at night when the parents come out, but was still a beautiful thing to see - Harmony and Balance in what probably a very rare occorance these days.  Also, i agree with Wayland on the point that its only worth hunting for a result, a worthy one. Trouble is, i feel, that todays hunting is all done at the supermarket - for the best B.O.G.O.F offers. There can be quite a frenzy around the reduced section too, especially first thing in the morning when the beasts are most hungry!

I'd be willing to give the men a 5 minute start then my dogs and I, with an assault rifle, would give chase. Sounds like good "sport" to me.
