Don't know about pigs.
All poultry owners are supposed to be registered with the DoAF since late 2005 (in response to the Avian Flu threat). I did register as I have a lot of contact with farmers and the DoAF through my work and also have a sign at the bottom of the drive advertising my surplus free range eggs for sale and have ads in the Buy & Sell at times, and in Practical Poulty. Having said that, most of the hobby poultry keepers I know are not registered. Since IMHO the avian flu threat, at least here in Europe, comes not from wild birds or backyard poultry keepers but from industrial units that ship eggs, meat, and birds all over the place (all the European outbreaks over the last year were in large commercial units in France, Hungary, Britain) I'm quite annoyed even being on a list like that but I kind of had to sign up for the reasons given above.
So, technically, yes, but .... Wink

I have heard that to advertise eggs as "Free Range" we need a permit. We can use the word "Fresh" with out restriction. More red tape!

That is what I have been told by someone else too .
There are one or two other points of detail in which UK laws/regs differ quite significantly from those in Ireland so this sort of dialogue can be invaluable to blow-ins like me .
As long as we know which bit of Ireland we are talking about ! Laughing . My comment , above , relates to the Republic Laughing
Did I mention on a previous post that an Inspector from somewhere actually drove out to my place ( unannounced ) to physically inspect and mark on a map the exact location of the pens I kept my 20 chickens in ! Mind you , it is very scenic around here and it was a nice day Laughing .

You can see from my profile !
I was actually being a bit devious ( Shocked ) and begging the question -- so members can see why it is helpful to put at least a general indication in the "location" field of their Personal Profile . Admin asked me to do that Wink Laughing
