What to sow now ..

Hi everyone,

would any of you let me know what you started planting this year ?

I'm thinking outside and in the unheated tunnel ...

would it be too early to start sowing toms and the likes ?

sunflowers are germinating allready in the soil in there .. radishes too ...

Thanks for your help,
Camile

its still abit early just yet i would wait till the weeds start germinating . then hoe them of before sowing that way you know the soil is warm and it gives your seeds a head start. i will start with carrots, parsnips, cauliflower, and broadbeans ,all of which can go in mid/late feb.

then my oinion sets early march and spuds.

You could plant onion seeds now. Plant them in a pot and put them on the window sill. You could do the same with lettuce. If you dig a trench in your poly tunnel and put in a thick layer of fresh dung then cover it with earth you will have produced a "Hot Bed". In this you can plant most seeds but make sure that you have about 200 mil of soil on top of the dung as fresh dung will burn the roots. You could even try a few tomatoes seeds but have a cloche at hand for the really cold nights. Radishes are another crop to plant in your polytunnel. Take a risk with a few of all types of seed. You may well be pleasantly surprised what you can grow in a hot bed in your tunnel. Good Luck.

Hi Wayland,

Good luck for the season mate. I have just sprayed my veg plot off so in a couple of weeks I will get cracking Very Happy  Unfortunately my poly tunnel is full of machinery etc. So I cant get an early start this year. I got a push along seed drill for Xmas., made in France it is. Cant wait to try it out.

Hmmm , we should be asking the French man  , not the other way round ! The stuff he has got growing in his new tunnel is much more advanced than mine . He has even got strawberries planted into guttering which is suspended from the crop bars , and a couple of hens raising early chicks in a run beneath them . Nice one , Camile  Wink  Laughing  .

Indeed  Very Happy . I was reading about a farmer who grew grape vines in his cow shed. The animals kept the vines warm. So how about pigs in the poly tunnel?. Some of these cranky ideas really work me thinks.

Wayland - I planted some onion seeds in potting compost in pots on the window sill in December. They grew about 4 cm tall and then just died. Do you think it was cause of the lack of light then? If I planted them now, would they grow?

Sorry Greentree. I missed this post Embarassed  This sometimes happens when we try to Steal a March on nature. The most likely cause of failure of window sill germination is that the room is too hot in relation to the daylight length. In my opinion that is. I have found that the young shoots leap away without establishing a strong root stock. The problems with your onions may be something else of course. I think that seedlings should be set in a cooler place once they have been germinated. Good Luck. Very Happy

Hello,

We've got a few going too ... some in the tunnel and some inside ..

inside: plenty of tomatoes (60 odd ones from different varieties), cucumbers, courgettes (yellow, black and green), gherkins, pumpkins, aubergines and most of them germinated allready ...

broad beans good to be replanted allready in the tunnel.

seedlings of lettuces, french beans, onions, red onions, leeks, more courgettes and the likes in the tunnel ... germinating slowly but surely ...

brocoli, peas, lettuces and a few radishes in the tunnel, we ate some lettuce allready, spuds in tires too ...

plus plenty of geraniums and other border/plant pots ... and fig tree and blueberries in pot waiting for some nice weather to go out ...

and will gett going on the chillis and peppers this weekend ...

ah the joy of being unemployed ...

PS: we're thinking of selling/bartering  some seedlings, so if you fancy some ..give us a shout ...
