TomsHi Everyone. I have a few questions on toms and was hoping you might be able to help. First of all when should I move them from their 5inch pots on the window sill to growbags in a unheated plastic green house? And secondly what kind of support do they need and from what size should I give them support. Many thanks. Liam

Hi Liam,
WE've transplanted our toms in the polytunnel over the last 10 days or so ... and they didn't seem to mind ... and they were only a couple of centimetres high, but with 4 or so true leaves ...
as for support, I was going to ask the same question .. altough I know you can tie them to ropes coming down ... so I was thinking to attach them somewhow to the crop bars ... I believe they only need some when they are fruiting ...
and I've planted some yesterday in some milk container, attached to the crop bar, the idea behind is that they won't need any support ...
and do you think there is a need to pinch out the side shoots ?

to be honest I dont have a clue about the side shoots. I am a first timer with the toms so time will tell if i am doing it right

If they are not bush or basket varieties you will need to pinch out the side shoot otherwise they will start to branch out and twist the plant. You also do it to manage the fruit development to a max.

Thanks for that ...
Do you grow your tomatoes outside or inside ?
And can I ask what kind of support you give them ?
Thanks,

We grow ours outside. Last year we had a great crop. As for support. We either run some garden twine from a top hook down to the 12"pot and tie them off as they grow or we use 6ft canes and tie them to it as they grow.
We are in the process of building a poly-shed but we will still grow the toms outside. Side shoots take energy and nutrients from the fruits........!
