Tobacco

Hi every one,
has any  body tried to grow tobacco? or even considered giving it ago. What with the credit crunch and much worse the amount of tax we have to pay on it surely it makes good sence to grow your own , and yes be suprised it will grow even here in Ireland a green house or poly tunnel will give better results. One plant will provide between 50 and 100grm of smoke,(e32 per plant aprox) .At last a crop that shows potential to earn real cash even if only for own use, as far as i can find out no law says you can,t grow it or smoke it but as for selling it , that could be a hole new ball game although i could see it bein a best seller on the farmers market! so guys grow it cure it and smoke it and up the tax man. It really does work we have grown it and smoked it Very Happy

where can you get the seeds.  its so silly it might work, and if it only grew it would be a conversation plant.

tobacco seeds

Hi patmk,
we aquired our seeds direct from Brazil, how ever there is a few English web sites on the subject complete with growers forums.   Once you have the seeds growing the plants will regrow next year  far more vigerous, the plants take aprox 14 weeks to flower and reach maturity, ours grow aprox 4ft high, so at harvest don,t dig them up just cut them down and they will return next year.

I have never smoked home-grown over here but have tried the unprocessed weed from native markets in Kenya and can only add that it made me very dizzy and sick as a dog . I imagine that the processing/fermentation technique has a lot to do with it it . How do you you mature the leaves ? Or do you just have a very strong constitution ?  Laughing

Hello,

I got some seeds from a friend of mine around here ..

so will definitely give it a go .. but indeed I think that it's the curing that is the hardest part ..

only time will tell ..

the hardest bit must be finding the 600 chemicals that go into them, don't think the co-op sell arsenic? Very Happy

Hi Sir Porky,

Would you have any tips on getting the seeds started ?

because they are so fine, should I cover them at all ?

and should I rather start them off inside or in the polytunel ?

Thanks,
Camile

Germination and curing of Tobacco

Hi All,
Germination of seeds:
As most seeds,a tray of compost or peat on your Windowsill is adequate.
Tobacco germinates easily in warm conditions.
When your plants are big enough to handle, prick them out and grow
on in a Greenhouse or Polytunnel.A distance of 40 cm between plants.
The Tobacco plant will have small clusters of flowers in ( usually ) red.

After flowering your plant can be Harvested.
Cut the Stem below the first leaf, your plant should regrow.
We strip away the leaves and place them in a tin or simular closed Container.
Each day you turn and air the leaves for around three or four weeks,
after which they can be dried and smoked.
The idea to keep the leaves in a closed Container is simply to
" brown" them.
At this stage we're still experimenting with the curing process and will
let you know,if we make any Improvements.
However,we are looking for better ideas on shredding the leaves fine.
as for the 600 or so cemicals do we really need them?  half are only there to keep us addicted, maybe with out them we could all stop smoking Very Happy

Hello.

I was just sitting down reading this post with my very first home grown cigarette ! wonderful ..

gladly surprise by the taste and smell .. doesn't burn you throat or anything ..

hurray !

That lot has been drying/curing in a cloth airer for the last 6 weeks or so ..

I'm off to the tunnel for the 2nd harvest because there are plenty of leaves coming along still .. might even get away with a 3rd harvest after this one ..

Brilliant stuff !

I dont smoke. Well that stuff anyway Cool , but I was once told that it must be cured properly. If not it may damage your eyesight. Just a cautionary note Wink

tobbaco harvest

we have also had 3 harvests this so called summer! and yes the stuff just keeps growing, we cut the plant down approx 25mm above ground and it returns with even more vigor up untill now we have about 3kg of dry cured tobbaco, ours smokes alittle like good cigars, maybe thats just the variety we have grown, we also have lots of seeds if any one is interesed.
up the tax man! Very Happy  sir porky.
Camile

So if I understand well you actually cut the stalk down don't you ?

so far I only stripped the leaves of it and left the stalk .. plenty of leaves left to harvest .. and most of them are in bloom now .. so hopefully they will self seed somehow ..

if they don't, I might be interested in some of your seeds ..

or better still we could swap some between us ..

You guys seem to be on a roll with this. LOL, Seriously though I do hope that you guys know what you are doing. I have been trying to remember what was said in the documentary about processing your own baccy. I think that it had something to do with the lack of sunlight intensity in these northern climes to eradicate some chemical nasty in the leaves. I will hush my mouth now.

tobbaco regrowth

yes we cut down the complete plant as soon as it seeds , and regrowth starts with in a very short time no need to reseed the plant just keeps on growing Very Happy  as for any other problems they come from the curing and you can tell straight away by the smell , we lost one batch that went wrong that way. tobbaco is grown in the uk by quite a few home growers check out coffin nails.co.uk.
