Howdy to all ye folk out there, and a special Hello to Phil, for making me feel so welcome! Having a quick browse down the replies here, it looks like your one of the more 'receptive' members on this site, so for that, i aknowledge and thank you. To everyone else, i'm sure its just a matter of time, so i look forward to meeting one another on the subject of a topic of some sort.  Its a pleasure to be a new member of this seemingly increasingly growing forum.
Tip of the hat, Space Cowboy.

Apart from cow boy'in?,Is that  wrasslin steers, and an interest in frontier gibberish.Do you have any other hobbies.
Space Cowboy

other interests

Well indeed, fronter gibberish is my favourite passtime, but i also really enjoy Wild food collecting. Cant wait for the next few weeks to bring in a whole load of new edible (and free) perishables. Autum time is my favourite, cause of all the mushrooms (and despite my name, its not 'those' ones that i mean.) I'm also interested in the self serficiency life style, which i imagine most of the folk on this forum are too. I dont have anything like Huge fernly whatshisname has going on, but a start is where it has to begin. Fishing (sea) is a favourite of mine too, although i havent been out too much lately!  How about yourself Phil?
phil

Gibberish is one of my strong points especially after a bottle of the local moonshine.
Space Cowboy

Ah yes, the lovely moon-shine.  I'm rather particial to a wee tipple myself, when i can come across it. Thinking i might get my old chemistry books out from school - i'm sure there's some information within them that i didnt fully appriciate when i was only a Nipper.
I'm having a go at making my own wine at the present - atleast 3 months into it, and a painfully slow process, but all books and people i've spoken to say first mistake is to try too soon! Think i might try doing some Gorse flower, that sounds interesting.  Have you ever given it a bash?
phil

I have tried to make all sorts of home brew. not one of them them worth drinking.
Space Cowboy

Thats a shame Phil. I once made some pretty drinkable Cider, using Apple juice from the cartoon ( essential its 100% juice), a T-spoon of yeast, and half a cup of sugar. It only took about 15 days to finish, when i had the first the glug, and used one of those Hydrometer thingymebobs and worked out i had a 7% Scrumpy.  But then decided i actually prefered fizzy Cider, and a friend told me all i haad to do was add a little sugar to the finished brew. I did, in Plastic bottles, and sure enough, afew weeks more and the stuff was ready to blow! Still have some tucked away, for those special moments....when theres nothing else left, but it was actually ok. Tasted very similar to 'Strong bow'.  Only thing was, that with the time it took, and the amount you got (i used i Demijon, 1 gallon), its an awfully quick way to drink 4weeks wait in an eve with afew pals.  So hence, i've moved onto wine.  Yeeha!
phil

Life is too short to drink bad homebrew,i would much rather pay someone who knew what they were doing, local hooch at twelve euro is a bargain.

.. Gorse flower

Never tried to make wine from it or even seen a recipe for same but have recently been told that it is very good . Don't think the person who said that is on the forum very often due to crap eircom landline but I will follow up because I plan to have a go at brewing it myself this year . All I can say from observation is that there is a period in Spring ( ? early - mid April ) when the smell from the Gorse ( aka Furze over here ) is overwhelmingly coconut throughout this little valley .  Good luck . Wink
Space Cowboy

Thanks for the hint Blowin -that sounds like it could be quite good, i wonder if the end result would hld some of that coconut fragrance? I'm also keen to try the classis Elderflower wine -Have you ever tried making that?  Tip of the Hat, Space Cowboy.

Sorry about delay in response . I'll start a separate thread on the winemaking . Hopefully someone will see it and give you better advice than I can  Wink
