Shotgun pelletsAre the pellets in shotgun cartridges still made out of lead ?
The local gun club have recently acquired rights to shoot in the woods around us and it sounds like a war zone at weekends ( which might explain why the chickens aren’t laying ) . .
Found a live cartridge – Number 12 shot – and counted 169 pellets inside it . Very shiney and , I am sure , very attractive to birds if they find them laying on the ground rather than being fired at them .

yes shotgun pellets are still made of lead. From what i gather they have had to switch to steel shot in the wildfowling areas of britain. i wouldnt think it would do any harm to the chickens if they were to eat a few pellets if that was what your concern was

Lead poisoning leads to deteriation of muscle strength . The most obvious symptom around lakes where too many lead fishing weights are lost is that the swans can't hold their necks upright . I would prefer not to eat those birds !
But I do agree that it is unlikely to have much effect on chickens because there won't be many pellets in the farmyard . On the other hand I imagine that the action of their crops would ensure rapid transfer of any lead from pellets into their bloodstream and thus further up the food chain .
Would you mind if I scatter a bit of poison in the woods around you , just for a bit of fun , like ?
