Shotgun Licencies.

I would like to own a shotgun here in Ireland and obviously need to get a licence. I also would like to bring over my air rifle which is rated at 30 ft lb. Can any of you lads tell me the proceedure to enable me to get a licence.
Cheers.

The system here is that you can have multiple shotguns but only one rifle, be it .22 or air. You will need a secure gun cabinet which will be inspected, you can't just shove them under the bed. If you have not been in the area for a long while you may require a UK police background check, but it may vary in different Garda areas.

The laws have changed recently so off down to the Garda station and seek enlightenment from the guardians of the peace.

Thanks for that Quarryman. I will be off down the Garda Station soon but It is better to know whats whats Wink . I would have expected a UK police check. I held a shotgun licence over there for over 30 years so hopefully this will be ok. It is interesting to know that I need a licence for any air rifle. In the UK this was not needed providing the gun did not exceed 12 ft lb. Thanks again.

It is good that the air rifle is still in the uk because it would be a very easy , innocent mistake to think that "anyone" can possess them here like they can over there . From the admitedly very limited enquiries I made I took it that you'd need something akin to a strictly regulated uk Firearms Cert for a normal air rifle . The shotgun cert would be easier , particularly since you had one in the uk , but here 1/ get form from gards 2/ select gun and enter serial nbr on form 3/ gards approve 4/ you buy . One cert per specific gun . I could very well be wrong and I haven't persued it further but that's what the local gards told me a couple of yrs ago .
Sorry to add to any confusion !
