Shooting and fishing in IrelandPicking up from thread "Driven shooting" by Callie, I shall, in the near future starting a website/forum largely based on shooting, fishing and the countryside from the "Celtic" point of view.
To give some idea of what I'm after, I would like people like yourselves finding out about what the area/county you live in have to offer - if you like, turn yourselves into mini tourist information offices for you locale. They kind of thing I would like to know is the geography of your area, the type of rivers/loughs of your area (the type or rivers and what fish are present), what clubs and associations control them and ticket prices. What type of agriculture is practiced - is there much woodland, moore, marsh or bogland.
For those that live near the coast any information regarding the famous Atlantic storm beach fishing (strands) or off the deadly high rock marks. Not forgetting the renowned charter fleets that operate out of the west coast ports.
If shooting is practiced, what type? Organised formal game shooting, rough shooting or deerstalking. I have persuaded Mark Elliot (founder and Chief Executive of the National Organisation of Beaters and Pickers Up (NOBs - I kid you not - www.nobs.org.uk ) to take on the RoI (at the moment I am the most westerly rep covering Carmarthenshire and western counties of Wales as far west as the Irish sea. I am also in talks with John Swift, Chief Executive of The BASC ( www.basc.org.uk ) to cover the RoI as well (BASC originated from WAGBI - Wildfowling Association of Great Britain and Ireland), so I think my argument is strong.
Myself and a number of others are doing the same for Wales and we would also like to include the West Country (Devon and Cornwall) and Scotland.
It seems to me there are many advantages here, from promoting the best your local area has to offer, to injecting cash into your local rural enterprises such as farming and accommodation.
Any information (including links) will be gratefully accepted.
Two points worth noting, a) this is not a commercial enterprise (just something I've seen a need for) and b) a great effort will be made to include the younger generation.
Thanks in anticipation and for letting me bore you.
John

Hi DS , that is quite a project you are taking on !
There are some very good " tourist board " sites , both national and local . The Central Fisheries Board site is informative . Sea Angling Ireland is a good forum .
That is a start , anyway . I will give more thought to it . Good luck
