return of State salmon & sea trout fishing licencesIt states on the licence that you must return it , duly completed with details of every fishing trip , within x number of days of the end of the season . There is a statutory fine for failure to do so . Take note that this does actually happen on occasion , and don't be tempted to save any unused salmon tags for tree-ties . The colour is a bit of a give-away for a start

Are you into tagging Salmon then Blowin?

I might be if ever I could catch one .
I'm afraid these aren't the conservationist / monitoring type . You get them with the licence . If you kill a salmon or sea trout you must immediately tag it ( like a cable-tie ) thru the gills and record details on your licence . Failure to do so = fine .
Different tag colours denote your status as private angler / commercial etc . . Blue is private , therefore illegal to sell .
No tag means illegal -- full stop ! ( Certainly for wild fish . There may be exceptions for farmed ? I'm not sure ) .
Tell you the truth , I spent the first 2 years determined to spot where they hold in the river 100 yds from here --- so I could catch them . Now I have watched them scraping holes to spawn , and actually had 2 decent fish find their way into my pond via a feeder stream from a tributary to the Moy I would be very reluctant to kill one anyway . But each to his own .

Thanks for the info Blowin. I have not yet had the chance at them yet, but next season perhaps. They can be fished for with licience in between the bridges in Enniscorthy. I did not know about the tagging though. I would not take them at a spawning ground. Well not the hens of course.

Ooops ( again ! ) .... I know you wouldn't but I now see that my "each to his own " carried an unintended implication . I meant to make it clear to any guests who don't actually know us that I wasn't moralising about salmon fishing in general . No offence intended .
