research for TV documentary seriesHello,
I'm a development researcher with Big Mountain Productions (www.bigmountainproductions.com) working on a network TV series based on people who have made the move to the country in an attempt to 'live the good life.'
I couldn't believe my luck when I happened across your forum as the series will be based in Ireland.
I've spoken to the very helpful and interesting Blowin already, but I'd also love to hear from anyone else who may be interested in sharing their own story with me too.
I've been reading back over past-posts etc so I'll probably be doing 'as any good researcher should' and be sending a couple of private posts to a couple of you who have said things which have caught my attention.
Having said that, if you haven't heard from me, PLEASE feel free to contact me- I'd really appreciate the opportunity of hearing as many of your stories as possible.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Sorcha.

I'll send you one if you like
I didn't get one either so you will have to let me have mine back sometime .
Welcome to our new Social Secretary All the rest of you have been fired .
I have to admit that when Researcher first contacted me by email dated 2nd April I did double check that it had been sent quite late in that day ie wasn't a delayed one from the day before !
We have since had a chat on the phone and R's project sounds great . Better be warned , tho' , that she might actually get something organised . But not for a while so that's ok . Phew !

Research for documentary seriesSorry Camile! nothing personal... (although now I feel guilty. I don't think I'd qualify as social secretary with that kind of carry on!)
Anyhow, just to elaborate on the project a bit... I imagine some people might think twice about sharing their story with a stranger via cyberspace, but please be assured of our genuine intentions to make a quality programme.
Basically, the series is for an English network TV channel and we're hoping to find people who have moved to the country in search of a more 'authentic' kind of living. (There definitely is a kind of communal yearning for such kinds of existence).
Just because it's for a UK audience doesn't mean contributors have to be from the UK originally but I am fascinated by the numbers of people from across the water who come over here to set up home and would be eager to speak to any such people out there. (This was probably one of my motivations in sending some of you a pm.)
Essentially, this is an observational documentary, meaning we will be following contributors around as they go about their lives.
So ultimately, we need people who would be happy with that arrangement.
In the meantime, I would really appreciate hearing any other suggestions you may have.
The other thing is that we won't be filming for a while, so whether you are waiting to start your life 'self-sufficientishly' or have already done so but have other plans and projects waiting in the wings, I'd love to hear from you.
Thanks,
Sorcha Griffith.

Hmmm , we'd better watch this Researcher in case she is monitoring the forum to see whether being mad is a prerequisitite for trying to be self-sufficient .
So , just to explain this Social Secretary hotcake which has become a bit of a tradition :- our friends over at River Cottage allow me to keep a post on their forum , inviting people to take a look at this one . The only suitable place for it is under "Events" .... which means we are supposed to be doing something we can tell them about and bring our own post back to the top !
But since none of us can quite get it together , we need a Soc Sec we can blame for all this inactivity .
Meanwhile you can read about what we nearly did , at http://forum.rivercottage.net/viewtopic.php?t=19672
It is Camile's turn to make the next post , I think

Blowin, does Researcher realise that our definition of self sufficient is that you can get to the off licence without the aid of a third party. Also just how difficult life is here as Fortnum and Mason don't deliver in The Wesht.

Was lost in the jungle called my veggie patch. We also have an unusual looking "plant" growing in the wilder areas, maybe of use to you for your "jungle". Drop in the next time you are passing and see what you think.... no its not giant hogweed.... could be a type of Euphorbia.
