renovating enamel on an old iron bathtub

I don't want to part with our old iron bath but the original enamel is "wavy" -- a bit like paint which was put on too thick -- and it is badly stained from the turf and possibly minerals in the water . I have phoned several of the people who advertise in the golden pages . The going rate for home visit re-enamel seems to be about e250 but what concerns me is that the new surface has a guarantee of only 2 years from one contractor and 5 from another . They also mentioned the need to use only certain cleaning products ( like soap and water ) and to avoid Cillit Bang at all costs .
Does anyone have any experience of this process ? Is the end result really that fragile ?
Any thoughts gratefully received  Wink

Blowin,
Sounds to me like your bath is a write off Sad  These guys will come out and all they do is give your bath a respray with 2 pac enamel car paint !  To do the job probaly you would need to to have it shot blasted to remove all the old enamel then get it restove enameled the cost of witch would buy 2 new baths.

Thanks ! That is pretty much the conclusion I had come to myself since the modern "re-enamelling " technique can be done in-house and has a warranty of only 2 to 3 years --  for someting like 250 - 300 euro .  A real enamel bath holds its shine for what ? 15 + years .
I have been taking an interest in some of the baths which are laying in the fields as water troughs . I don't imagine that many of them would have in-tact legs/feet of the old ball and claw design but ,if they do , they would be very desireable in the architectural salvage market .
