Registration, flock number, etc ..

Hi everyone,

Seriously now, I would really be grateful if anyone could make a thread listing everything you need to do to register a flock/herd for sheep, goats and pigs..

A real step by step, ie contact the vet who will contact blabla ..

with links to documents and all .

I know it's been talked about before but I haven't seen anything simple in the one thread .,.

so please, can anyone help ?

I should have access to 3/4 in about 2 weeks time .. and would love the piglets for within a month or so ..

to register for herd number just ring the NPITS Helpline 1890 504 604
or fax 01 607 2843

Thanks Squirrel01,

I believe they then send you the forms needed don't they ?

And can I ask if they come and visit the place before hand or you simply can expect a visit from the authorities once in a blue moon ?

did you have anything specific to prepare before hand ?

Thanks again,
Camile

i just rang them up and they were sent out, fill in the form and thats that, not had any visits yet.
just make sure everything is ready, i use stock wire with a few strands of barb wire, only thing with this is if they are too small then they might get through holes in wire, (as i found out).
tried to put photos up but failed....aghhh

they get put in the holding pen first, to give them time to settle in, these were in there for 2 weeks, can also lock them away at night when small...

they then are let loose on the future veg plot..

Like Squirrel I only had to make one phone call . The application form was sent out to me and I was given a herd number without any fuss . I did not have to make any special preparations . I have had one inspection , which was unannounced . That was about 4 years ago .
There are some very useful leaflets available free of charge . Ask the NPIS helpline if they do a starter's information pack . I don't know where mine came from -- they just arrived in the post one day ! I will dig them out for you if needs be .
Just to be clear -- my experience relates to a limited number of pigs ( 3 ) which are free range / housed outdoors . I am pretty sure that the regulations are different ( stricter ) if you have a greater number and/or indoor housing but I don't have any detail to hand . This should not affect your application for a herd number tho' .

Hi guys,

Thanks for the repiles .. I'm going to give them a ring right now.

And I'm in the same situation, just a few weaners to fatten up and that's it ...

we won't even go into breeding ... and doubt we ever will .. but time will tell ... but there definitely won't be any indoor involved ..

and just a rough idea, what size of housing did you plan for 3 weaners ?

thanks again,
Camile
