raw egg in a planter as fertilizer

I saw this on a gardening page today.
You're supposed to put a bit of soil at the bottom of a planter/pot, then put a raw unbroken egg on top, more soil and then the plant. This should act as a natural fertilizer as the egg decomposes.

I'm not sure I'm seeing the benefits of it.
Will the ''fertilizer'' not run out with the water, not benefiting the plant at all because the egg is lower than the plant ?
As for the smell...decomposing eggs ain't pretty, especially not when they're out in the sun
Or does it make sense ?
