Rats and Wiels diseaseAm not sure that I have spelt that correctly – Wiels / Viels ( slow landline inhibits google search ) . It is carried by rats and is most often contracted by handling something which is contaminated by rats’ urine when you have a scratch or broken skin on your hands . It has severe flu-like symptoms and can be fatal . It is apparently quite common over here . Or is that just another scare story ?

A lad i knew scrapped cars as a hobby, cut his hand on a rusty wing.A few days later he was treated for flu by the time his organs failed it was too late.He was 34 years old.Not a nice way to go !

crap .. and here is me trying to sort out a rat that lives in one chicken shed ...
I will have to resort to something more than leaving a cat in there overnight ..
so if you don't here from me one day .. that means I'm gone ..

to solve the rat problem put a sheet of galvanis out across a path you think the rat is travelling putting some old meat and food and plenty of rat poison the sheet of galvanise will stop your hens from getting at the rat poison

That sounds like a good tip Patmk
thanks for that.
The simplest are sometimes the best solution.
I managed to get rid of the rat ( I think) by placing 2 bags of poison in the sewage pipe he was traveling through (lucky them pipes were here in a way as it made it safe to bait).
The first night the bags were gone .. and about 1 week after that I didn't see any activities from here no more.

I don't like the idea of using poison on anything. If you put bags of poison in sections of drain pipe they must be tied so the rat can't drag it out and leave it where other animals can pick it up.Traps are a far better option and in the long run will work out cheaper, you only target what you want to get rid of,and of course you must only set the traps where its safe to do so.

The best thing for getting rid of rats is a terrier.
