Phew -- we are up and running and it is looking good !!

Well, founder members , what can I say ? Hello and Welcome to the Irish forum !!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
Thankyou for bearing with me while I set it up . As you know , the original plan was just to work out some simple way of communicating but this template came free Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy so we might as well take advantage of it .
It would be great if everyone would put a bit of detail in their personal profile and tell us a little about themselves . Nothing too specific ( this is an open forum ) and only as much as you want to reveal Laughing There is no need to put anything at all but since we hope to meet each other at some point it would be a friendly initial gesture .
Having said that I really must get some sleep so I'll tell you about myself a bit later Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Hi Blowin. Well done mate Very Happy, and thanks for spending the time and effort putting this site together. Just the job. This will without a dought help the Irish contingent of smallholders, and hobby farmers to meet other like minded folks and share information etc. We look forward to some social interaction even if its just down the pub Very Happy . Nice one Blowin.

Hi Frizzle. Roisin and Camile. Thanks for joining us. I thought I would just give a brief few words about the "House of Wayland" Very Happy My name is Chris and my other half is Gloria. We live near Enniscorthy with my daughter Kate. We are about to start building our new home on a one acre site and are renting a further two acres. As this is a new build it is a good opportunity to include as much ECO friendly ideas into the building as we can. Subject to cost of course. We have kept stock in the UK and look forwark to stocking up our new smallholding. I will need to get a bit more land though later. This will have to wait untill next year. Its going to be a busy year. Looking forward to it.

Chris & Gloria.

Well done blowing! It's not an easy job to take on organising a group of people, not to mention starting a discussion board. I for one am very grateful you took it on (and not me!) Smile

I'm from and now living in Dublin again. Single but with a large brood of nieces and nephews. I spent time in Germany while I was in college and again for a while after I finished. Seems like a very long time ago now. I never intended to stay in Ireland when I came home but life happens and nine years later here I still am. My current five year plan involves clearing my debt (who allowed banks to give credit cards to fiscally irresponsible twenty-somethings anyway!?) and building some savings and then to move back to Germany or possibly to France, where one of my sisters lives already.

In the meantime I'm working on simplifying my life and recently signed up with WWOOF (worldwide opportunities on organic farms, an organisation which puts willing volunteers in touch with organic farms who need helpers) which I hope will enable me to spend a bit more time learning about becoming more self-sufficient so that in five years I'll be better able for it.

Hmmm, I think someone's going to have to tell me how to get rid of google ads in my post as well. Or is it something which has to be put up with to have a free service?

well done blowin, nice work, well i am 43/m and been over here nearly 5 yrs, (god is it that long), like everyone, built a house. spent the last 5 yrs trying to decide what to do with 4 acres, so at the moment, the only animals we have live in the house, hopefully that will change, unless this rain doesnt stop.... anyway better go and feed the stock, the bunny looks hungry...........squ~
Róisín

Hello everyone, I am delighted this has been set up and am going to plug it wherever I go, online and IRL. Well done lads!!

I'm probably (this is usually the case anyhow) the baby of the group, I'm a 25 year old currently living in Galway. More selfsufficentISH than anything else! Well I make my own bread anyhow, even if I don't actually grow anything (yet...) Laughing
Conor

Sorry, Róisín, but I believe I take the baby of the group title... I'm a wee lad of 17 and hopelessly alone in suburbia.

I've been doing what I can to give myself the lovely illusion of progress on the self-sufficiency ladder (veggie garden, homemade bread), recent projects including sewing my own clothes and attempting to learn to thatch...success has been limited.

HA! I must be mad.

Nonetheless, I believe I share the dream with most of you. 'Tis only a matter of time... Sad

Hey , Conor , glad you could make it all the way from the USA Very Happy . That sounds great -- don't belittle your efforts , tell us a bit of your story instead !
Or I will ! Hope you don't mind ( shout and I'll delete if you wish ) . Wink
Conor stayed with us as a ( very good Wink) WWOOF volunteer for several weeks last summer . Feel free to let the world know how chaotic or different things must have seemed when you first landed with us . Could be educational but funny will do , given the weather here at the moment Laughing

The WWOOF theme would warrant a topic of its own . Care to start one ? Your choice where you put it !! Laughing

Who said anything about organising people ??? I can't even organise my pigs !!!
WE NEED A SOCIAL SECRETARY ( if anyone really wants to be sociable ) . Any volunteers ????

The WWOOF org is great . We've been hosts for a couple of years ( so if you want to come and do a bit of winter digging snorkeling ............... Wink ). It could do with its own thread . Care to start it off ?

Go on Conor
