native freshwater mussels and crayfish

Just wondering whether you have noticed either of the above in the rivers around you . I have found a 1/2 mile stretch of river which has both in it but I haven't seen them anywhere else .
Are they rare or classed as protected ?
If not , what do they taste like Laughing

Have signals got over here?

I am assuming not , but that is only because I haven't heard or seen anything on eg the Fisheries Board sites .
I suspect that they could remain undetected for ages unless they appear in a fish farm or popular stretch of river . Better keep the eyes open !

Yes Mate. They are great to eat and easy to catch but, they are one critter that Ireland could well do without.

Freshwater crayfish

I dont believe signals have made it over here but there are a species of european ones that hve been here for a long time. They are believed to have been brought here by monks and bred in ponds etc. They are regarded as protected (I think) as they are believed to be a 'pure' line and not that plentiful. (so the stuff I have seen on them anyway)
