One of the hardest things I found to cope with at a personal or business level is that people here seem to hate saying no. So, instead of saying I'm too busy and won't be able to get back to you, they will not turn up and won't let you know. You'll also find that for every 5 guys you get round for quotes 3 won't bother sending one in and the 2 that do won't follow it up.

On the business side of things it wasn't a case of sorry we're not interested but come in for a meeting or send me some information followed by lots of fruitless follow up.

I got a proper job in the end Laughing

Just to give a Irish perspective on getting things done by tradesmen etc

You should always plan well in advance and not expect to impose deadlines. Its more of a frame of mind really. For example, I just got a new fence built. Made a few calls in December, eventually got it built in Feb but I didn't really need it until April or so - no rush. You just need to follow up each week ie put in your diary to ring him/her each week and gently put the pressure on!

Also, you would be amazed how cheap you can get things done if you know who to ring and are prepared to wait. I got a whole new roof on my house for 2K but had to wait a year to get it done! There was no rush, I just figured I needed it sometime in the next few years!!

Maybe this 'not saying no' thing is a hangover from when there wasn't much work around....

On a personal level , I am sure MOH and I had a few "debates" when we lived on a housing estate in the uk but I am equally sure that they weren't about which of the animals should get the left-overs ! Laughing
