Metal detectors

It surprises me that I have never seen anyone using a metal detector over here -- not even on the popular beaches around Strandhill or Inniscrone where people must loose loadsamoney during the holiday season . Are they illegal ---   or is it simply not worth the hassle of picking up coins these days ?

Actually they are pretty damn expensive to buy over here in ireland, I have personnaly used a cheapish one on our local beach, complete waste of time!! I think you need to invest big bucks to buy one up to the job.

I was told it's because of the huge numbers of burials due to the potato famine; lots of unmarked graves/bury where they fall type deaths. Therefore, digging after using a detector could disturb unmarked graves, etc.
I think it came up the first time I wnet to Ireland. I'm not a detectorist, as it bores the proverbials off me, but I know a man who is.
Seems a plausible reason to me, though.

I certainly wouldn't use one in the place we call the Faerie Wood !!

Why not use one in the Faerie Wood ?
Same reason that I won't use a chain saw in there these days and , indeed , don't even pull brambles by hand without first asking permission and even then be sure to quit before dusk . Failure to observe those rules almost invariably leads to strange or unpleasant results . I speak as as someone ( an ageing hippy perhaps ) who believes that there are many forces around us that we don't normally perceive  or understand but nevertheless I demand  a rational/empirical explanation  for everything . Most of the results I refer to do have a logical explanation -- - dead branches fall on your head when you shake the tree / you fail to notice the hole beneath your feet when you are concentrating on something else / logs can glow due to bio-luminescent fungi / power tools won't run when the evening air gets damp etc etc ... but the serendipity of it is overwhelming .
There is a circular area in there , surrounded by the remnants of a stone wall . It has a very strange atmosphere . The locals who seem to know everything about the history of this property and every little detail of the previous use of the land either can't or won't tell me anything about it . I suspect it was a burial ground for unchristened babies but that is just an educated guess .  For 5 years I would not interfere with it then I eventually got a friend to give me hand . He stomped the undergrowth in what seemed to be a very disresectful/unsympathic manner . That night my car got trashed by vandals .
As I said , the serendipity is overwhelming even tho I am mindful of the saying that what you will find largely depends upon what you are looking for .
Laugh if you wish but I feel that using a metal detector in there would be an invasion of privacy which might lead to "them" exploring a bit too deep within me .
