Its all very quiet here.It must look quite boring seeing the same few names posting on this site all the time.

Hi Wayland , I have been thinking the same thing myself . It is great that there are a number of regular contributors but I fear that the forum will begin to look like a boring private club unless someone else says something .
We still get a good number of visitors . One post had nearly 4000 ( four thousand ) views over a couple of days !!! That is quite exceptional but the point is that not one of them left a comment !!
This seems to be a trend across some of the more interesting small forums . . I have received several circulars which are basically asking where everyone has gone . We obviously aren't alone but simply knowing that doesn't help a lot !
I enclose a copy of my reply , for info , but would like to add a couple of words about our forum in particular :-
From what I have read and the members I have met I would say that we are a very un-assuming bunch of people . Almost over-modest , not wanting to "brag" about major achievements or to say anything which might "cap" someone else's story . Reluctant at the same time to ask really basic questions for fear of appearing stupid . Either that or there are other reasons why the blowins might want to keep their heads down !
Those who have been here for a while forget how "different" everything is ( compared to the uk ) . Culture , climate , the way the ground behaves , who to ask , what the law really says ( and variations on its enforcement ) etc etc . . Once they have found out the hard way they obviously don't need to raise the question for themselves ---- but it would be immensely helpful to newcomers who probably don't even know where to start .
Same thing with achievements -- tell us about them . I certainly need a bit of inspiration when the jobs all seem to be never-ending !
Tell me to stop sermonising if you like ! Anything constructive , informative or amusing will do . Just say summat ( as long as it is not
about what is happening on Eastenders , thankyou . . )
Copy of reply to a circular :-
"Hello again from one of your long-term absentees .
If it is any consolation to you there has been a similar trend on the
"Irish" forum . There are plenty of regular visitors but the number of
active contributors declined over the winter -- so the number of
readers is dropping too . It is disheartening for Admin & the Mods who
put in a fair bit of (unpaid)time in order to keep things running
smoothly , but there you go ! Worst case is that it will simply grind
to a halt .
Seems to me that the original members have by now asked most of their
general queries .Once their project is up and running they feel they
will look stupid if they go back to basic questions . That is not true
, of course .
Similarly there is great reluctance to admit mistakes .
Both of these things are a pity about because they would be very
simple ways to pass on your own experiences and save someone else from
having to find out the hard way --- like most of us did and are
probably still doing !!
So , I'll second the exhortation for everyone to contribute from time
to time ---- if you have chosen an alias then no-one knows who you
are anyway!!

Hello,
we should organise a good meetup so that everyone gets confident with each others ...
and I want to remind everyone that lots of people on the site are willing to help with some tasks, like when we've put up the tunnel last year ...
I'm pretty sure we have all the skills for about everything on this site, and that can make some big jobs into a fun amusing day.
