Honey.

I have been using Honey for years to treat wounds and other infections. It stings like hell, but does a very good job. I never new what it was about honey that makes it so effective, untill I read an artical by a group of medical students who were studying "Old Wives Tails". They established that Honey contains no antibiotics or any other ingredients that could help in the healing of wounds. So as a final test before it was dismissed as of no use, they put some honey in a petrie? dish along with some nasty germs/microbes and left it over night. In the morning, there was not one thing left living in the dish. So how did honey kill all these germs? As bee keepers know , honey is only spoilt by moisture. It will keep for a thousand years providing moisture is kept out, and this was the clue. The students found that honey is so hydroscopic that it draws moisture out of any living orgainism that it comes into contact with, and literally kills it by dehydration. By keeping out infection the wound heals naturally. So, job done.

The down side is that honey is sticky and will attract dust etc too it. So
always use a plaster and change it regulary. I would not put it on a burn in the first instance but treat the wound a few days later. Lavinder oil is a good treatment for burns. Honey is also good for the treatment of fungal infections. Athletes foot can be got rid of effectivly by applying honey to the cleaned effected area. Then put a clean sock on to stop you getting honey on the bed sheet etc. In the morning wash your feet thoughly and dry them well then put on more honey and a clean sock and get on with your day. Cheers. Wink

I find this whole field fascinating .
Thanks for the explanation re: honey . I first used it on injured birds just to keep my dear mother happy ( she swears by it ) . As you say , the results are remarkable . I haven't tried it on myself tho' . now there's a thought ....
I am somewhat sceptical about the claims made for a lot of these things but another two I would recommend to anyone are Lavender oil and Arnica cream . The Lavender oil can go straight on to burns and scalds . It eases the pain and seems to stop a blister from being raised too . Arnica -- rub onto any external bruising . Again , it eases the pain and in this case minimises the swelling and discolouration. I'm sure it has saved me more than one blue finger nail Wink .
I should add , of course , that I am not a medic .. etc
Any others from anyone ?

Every house should have an Aloe Vera plant. I think the sap does a better job than Lavinder oil on burns, in so much that the glutinous sap keeps air away from the wound which has a soothing effect. Lavinder oil is great though and can be got almost anywhere. Not so the Aloe Vera.
