HiHi, Great forum. So helpful to hear from other peoples experiences.
We keep some chickens, geese & ducks.Have a problem with a pine martin that wouldnt get trapped. A couple of horses, a goats for milking & cheese that gives us 6 litres a day and a wonderful veg garden that could do with major weeding.
Just had a dept.of agri over this morning for an inspection for a pig no. Hoping to fatten a couple for xmas. And we really would love to keep a few bees in the future.
we dont know any body else that does similiar, so would be great to meet other like minded people in our area. We are in our late twenties with a small family.

Hi Marie, glad you have joined the forum. There are some people in your general area who are doing the same as you. Are you North, South, East or West Galway. That will give them a better idea of how close you are.
Feel free to ask questions and pass comments and to post a few pics of you set up and animals.

Hello Marie.
Camile lives near Glenamaddy he keeps bees.
What sort of trap are you using for the Pine Martin.

We live in North Galway. We are using a cage type trap with an egg as bait. But i think the martin isnt heavy enough to get the door to shut. Any body have any useful tips on bait and placement of trap.
Any idea how long it takes to get a herd no. after inspection?
Thanks

I would have thought you would have been told straight away about the pig number, could be they will send you a herd number through the post.
I have only ever caught one marten and that was by accident, they are quite a big animal very long,if you are using the standard rat/mink cage it might be too small, you might do better with a cat trap.I always tie the bait to the bottom of the trap beyond the treadle, try some meat,i would place the trap along a hedgerow or fence line.

Hi Marie and welcome to the forum .
You will find that quite a few of us are kindred spirits .
We just need a Social Secretary to get a few of the bodies to meet up with the souls . That has proven to be somewhat more of a challenge than fattening pigs but , if you are up for it , we can have a poll to see if you can get elected .
Nah , you have got the job anyway and with immediate effect . Good luck !
With apols to previous candidates . You are all fired . The self-doubting psychopath wasn't manic enough and the one who enquired about salary and expenses should just have added several zeros and sent in the bill .
........... But they are both high on the reserve list on account of the quality of their replies .

Social Secretary, I'll have to start developing my own one first but i guess i could give it a go!

Don't worry, the next person to join the forum automatically gets the job...

We don't have horses of our own but do let a couple of friends graze theirs on our field from time to time .Just now there is a lovely Conemara mare with last year's foal plus a Tinker's trotting pony which is quite shy I suspect on account of the way the owners treat it . I don't "do" horses but thought I would make an effort by coaxing it to a bit of apple , then went into a horse-whispering fantacy moment making sort of coo-ing noises and kneeling down in front of it , standing back up and blowing gently into its ears and suchlike . It seemed ( to me ) to be really enjoying all that . Ears forward and snuffling . Then it bit me on the chest . I wasn't sure whether it was and an affectionate nibble or an aggressive bite but it feckin hurt so I very definitely don't do horses any more . Not at close range anyway .
Pigs are good !

Getting out inevitably seems to involve confrontation with bitety things ---- midge ; horses ; the human race .
Sometimes best to stay close to home and take a tipple of the juice which helps with practicing the technique of the Ministry of Silly Walks .
That is quite interesting up on the barn roof where I have spent a fair bit of time lately , doing that job which several of you so kindly volunteered to help with a couple of years ago .
But I think we have sidetracted Marie's thread ! Where were we ? I think she nearly accepted the job of Soc Sec . If so she can earn a stack of brownie points by organising everyone to come here for a bit of a do as soon as I have got this shed finished so we can have a drink under cover , where it won't get diluted by this incessant rain

Sounds good

The offer to help on the barn still stands, just say when.

Nice one , my very tolerant friend phil -- I will give you a shout ( and collect those Guinea Fowl if you still have them but no worries if you don't . I guess that Camile might have eaten them by now ! ) .
And Marie I should warn you that this might actually happen this year ( after 6 of procrastination ) so you are in danger of being the first Soc Sec to have organised anything ( other than camile's pollytunel ) . You could end up with the job for life . I would suggest that you recruit at least 6 new members or tell an awful lot of silly jokes in order to get out of that !

We would intend to come with plentiful amounts of good things to eat and drink . But when it came to it we would probably consume those at home and not leave our own front doors so you are fairly safe in offering any sort of invitation !

Marie

ye are all welcome if you ye are bringing lots of good things to eat and drink Couldnt turn ye away then. But ye'll be going home with my surplus chooks
|
Camile

sounds like a plan then ..
or we could turn your surplus chicken into dinner ! saves us bringing any !
We'll bring the Pea "Legless" Pod wine ..

I have finally got a roof on the barn so inebriates could sleep in there if they wish . The pigs are getting bigger despite losing condition on account of having to swim thru mud to get to their feed . And Sir Porky has demonstrated an excellent way of cooking a whole pig in a 40 gallon barrel over an open fire == so , hopefully , we will have a get-together this year whether at your place or mine tbc .
As you may have guessed I am trying to seduce you into accepting the role of Soc Sec . I can't imagine why I am doing that because most of us would desert this little forum rather than be organised in any way .
