Hi from TassieYes - Tasmania Australia. Brought up in Co. Down N. Ireland and been here in Oz for 11 years.
Came across this forum yesterday via a link from River Cottage, and spent a very happy hour reading and laughing.
Living on 60 acres with the usual menagerie, poly tunnels, vegie garden and orchard.
Most Australians reckon the Tassie climate is similar to Ireland, but I can tell you there are a few differences - it's late summer here and it's been pretty warm (high 20's) for weeks and bl**dy dry for months. We had 6mm of rain yesterday and I was out there in shorts, t-shirt and workboots dancing around the garden Hard to believe that in another few months I'll be stoking the fire and adding extra layers before going out to break the ice on the chicken's water bowl.
Looking forward to exchanging thoughts and ideas ...... but obviously won't be much help on sourcing things locally ..........

Hi and welcome bernie. Wow, 60 acres in Tasmania with temp in the high 20's for weeks - I'm green with envy. What other contrasts are there between Ireland and Australia? What crops/veg/fruit do you grow for instance? As someone whose parents seriously considered the move out in the 60's I'd love to hear about where I was almost brought up.

Okay, round to our place it is then. BBQ on the veranda, a few beers down by the dam and then off to the Top Pub, otherwise known as The Penguin Hotel (so named because the town is called Pengiun - I kid you not)
And just for the record ... Bernie's a she

Hey Bernie, I normally call Australia West Island so I suppose you must be living on South West Island.

Right then. I suggest you hop a jumbo as far as Melbourne then take the ferry to Tassie and I can give you directions from there. Just give me the ETA and I'll have the barbie fired up and beer in the fridge .........
Wayland - I must come across all butch in my emails cos I've lost count of the number of times people have phone here looking for Bernie and been 'expecting a man'. Gives me a good laugh
