Hi from LimerickHi all,
I came across this site by accident from the River Cottage website and I'm very happy I did.
I nearly bought some pigs from Kilmallock Mart this morning but it seemed a bit impulsive so logged onto the net to try to find out some info.
I'm not much of a smallholder, I just have the four chickens, but I have about half an acre and between learning to grow some stuff and maybe having a few smallish animals we are looking to improve the food we eat, quality of life and have a bit of a hobby too.
That's the plan anyway, as long as I still have time for a bottle of wine at the end of the week.

Hi and welcome Rool. You say that you are new to smallholding. Just a bit of a word in regard to buying stock from the mart. Dont do it! unless you have a mentor with you. I say this for many reasons but remember that stock at the mart is being sold because the owner does not want to keep them, and all that implies. Better to buy from a local breeder who has his street cred to protect.
Cheers.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone.
Wayland, yes good advice, It's what ultimately stopped us from purchasing anything other than chickens so far. If we are to do it we really need to research it properly and make sure we have the time, facilities and capabilities to look after any animal properly.
Gallons of wine huh, does anyone have a house warm enough to complete the fermentation?
