Hi from Co WicklowI confess! I'm a bloody foreigner Been living in Wicklow for 7 months. We're very happy in Ireland and are hoping to buy a place with a bit of land soon. We're currently looking in Monaghan. Hubs works all over the place so location isn't so much of an issue as long as he can get to Dub airport.
So there's me, hubs & 5 yr old son & a very mental cat! We're both in our 30's and have every intention of beginning our journey to the good life - albeit on about an acre but we have to start somewhere!!
I usually hang about on the INEBG forum - I'm pretty sure I've seen the odd name on here from over there too.
Anyway - Hiyas all - looks like a grand forum

Hello and welcome, Akuma. Monaghan is a great area to start looking but you will find land prices a bit on the high side. I'm originally from Co. Louth and moved West in 2003 but we have friends in Monaghan and their land has taken a jump in price in the last couple of years.
Depending on where your OH flies to, good UK connections from Knock Airport [Ireland West]in Mayo and Galway Airport. The land is cheaper and you would be in The Wesht.

Hi Akuma and welcome to the forum .
I think you will find that an acre is more than enough to start with ! I'd suggest that you read John Seymore then throw the book away and talk to a few members of this forum to find out what it is really like !
Yes , you will have come across some of us on the other forums . There is good advice to be had from them , particularly on specialist subjects where they have a wider/bigger pool of knowledge , but you will find that some of it is not best suited to the Irish environment . You will get the local input on here .
I'd say that is good advice from quarryman . This is a stunning area . Definitely "rural" but Knock airport gives easy access to the uk .

Thanks for the welcome!
We went for Monaghan as it's within easy reasch of both Belfast & Dublin just incase there were to be any issues with his job then he would still be in a slightly better position to travel to either city.
Nothing's set in stone though but compared to Wicklow Monaghan is cheap as chips
I've got a friend who's in the throws of buying a tiny 3 bed semi in Leopardstown....it's well in excess of €500,000 Mad, mad world!!
We've got 2 copies of John Seymour..... but my saving grace is I lived on a smallholding as a teenager - my folks had a dairy goats ( I adore goats!!) we also had a couple of pigs and a load of chooks, I had a pony too, so I have a (faint) memory of all the work involved - Dad always saved the goat's pens for us to clear
Anyway, I'll dig in for a good old read - it's great to find a forum specifically to Ireland - I'll have masses of questions no doubt!
Thanks again!

Welcome on board Akuma - I'm in Wicklow too - on just over an acre. We have hens and grow the veg.
I work from home and fly about once a fortnight. You'll find that Dublin is great if you are going anywhere in the UK/Europe - there really are lots of flights.
No chance of you staying in Wicklow then!?
