hello

I've been eavesdropping for a while now, thought i should say hello.
We live in east Galway, we've been here for a few years, building our house every evening and weekend, but now the recession's landed and i have a bit more time on my hands so we've managed to kick off our small holding. So far just horses, hens, muscovy ducks and a small flock of soay sheep.

No , that would be a real bummer Shocked.
Not that it would make a real difference to anything or anybody since no Soc Sec or anyone else for that matter has ever been able to organise anything on this forum .
However , my mate Admin has just delegated the job to me and I am delighted to inform you that you are , indeed , the NEW SOCIAL SECRETARY   Wink .
So , work away and socially secretise as best you can .
Failing that you have to recruit an unsuspecting new member , or tell a silly joke , or just do nothing like most of your predecessors    Wink  Laughing

thanks for job offer, very excited but i cant seem to find any details about social secretarys salary anywhere on the forum, or where to send expenses receipts, but once we get this sorted then its all round to mine for tea and sandwiches. you might have to bring your own tea. and sandwiches

Welcome Tractorpunk

We have hens, geese, Aylesbury ducks and 2 pigs (for fattening) and looking to get some sheep.

You mentioned you have a small flock of Soay sheep, which is something we have considered getting. How do you find them? Where did you get them from? We are looking for a breeding pair, but have struggled to find anyone who has any to sell.

It's a great forum, just a couple of dodgy characters to look out for!  Wink

hi ,we're big fans of our soay, they often get a bad press but they're no problem really. you need really good fencing as they're good at escaping. Lots of hurdles, pens and races to cut down options when you want to move them cos they dont herd like regular sheep, when worried they scatter in every possible direction. ours follow buckets and come to a call now so theyre pretty easy to control.
They thrive on bad grazing. our land is brutal, i'd give it 1 out of 10 and thats only cos it hasn't slid down the mountain yet, but still the soay thrive, browsing more than grazing, eating rushes, docks, brambles and the odd blade of grass when they can find it and are keeping weight well.
lambing was easy, no problems at all. their feet are good, no need to shear and no fly strike.
they look great but most of our neighbours seem to think they're midget deer so hopefully no short sighted hunter will cull them all this season.
we got ours in the buy and sell, just lucky, but there seems to be a few here and there. we might sell some next year if thats any use.
