Hello from KerryJust found this forum and am glad to share knowledge with anyone on this island.
I live in South Kerry for the time being but the constant development is getting on my nerves so I want to sell up and move somewhere else and start over.
I have a blog at http://the-goodlife.blogspot.com where I detail what I get up to and also have a good rant at modern consumer society.
Oh, and if anyone has a spare 10 acres or so to sell then let me know.

Hi and welcome Jaybee. An interesting blog you have. I will be looking for a 4x4 later this year. I notice how well the Mitsub**** range last. Their are many of circa1990 around here and look in good nick. Welders are very usefull as you have found. I have both stick and mig and would not be without them.

Hello there Jaybee, welcome to the forum. From your blog it sounds as if you are having too much fun. The 4x4 you should go for is the Toyota Landcruiser. You will pick up a 10 year old one over here for reasonable money, try the adds in The Farmers Journal.
Looking forward to reading your posts.

I think Toyotas are a little out of my league with their enormous engines. I like the idea of a 1.1 litre Mitsubishi. Not much road tax. I hate paying taxes!
I prefer my scooter though. Very economical. I just need to pull a trailer of seaweed, manure or boat every now and again.

The Toyotas are built to last, my one is used to pull trailer loads of stone, to carry my dogs and to transport me over and back to Dundalk in comfort.
It is said that you should see what the local travelers and farmers are driving to see what is reliable and that is mostly old Isuzus and Toyotas.
No one wants to pay tax so get a commercial version and the road tax and insurance are quite low.

How does that work?
Do I need to prove that the vehicle is being used for a commercial reason?
Is "Arse Scratcher" a legitimate business?
I am looking at the "Commercials" section of carzone.ie. Do all those qualify?
This is all very interesting. Glad I joined this site!

I take it you are not registered for VAT lol.
When you go to insure it you will be asked for a vat number but if you give them your PPS number that will do. Put your occupation down as "grower" veg etc. The occupation for lowest insurance is "accountant".
AXA are giving very low rates for "light commercial" vans etc.
Once a year you will have to get a DOE test in order to road tax it, that should cost under €100.
Good luck with the search.

I was registered for VAT but I came off it after not doing anything for a year.
Maybe I'll go back on.
I do such a disparate range of things that I can't be pinned down to one occupation.

Welcome JayBee !!
I have a commercial toyota landcruiser jeep. Great for towing stuff. The commercial versions are much cheaper (due to our tax system) and the yearly tax is cheaper too. Yes - AXA are the ones for commercial insurance.
