hedge layingI have to lay a hedge of quite old Whitethorn ( Hawthorn ) . The trees are about 15 ft high with 4 - 6" trunks . The branches haven't been pruned for years so are dense and tangled . I will have to reduce the bulk before I can lay them over . How brutal can I be without killing the trees ? Almost bare trunks , saving only the side branches which will end up vertical ?

I dont know how far you have got with this Blowin but the easiest method to control this hedge is to just cut the trees down to a stump. This will then grow back as a stool. Let the many new stems grow up to about ten foot Then lay them in both directions. This will form a a good stock proof barrier. If you are going to leave it another year perhaps you may hold a hedge laying week end.
