Grey water questionsI thought all grey water had to go into a sewer or septic tank system now due to health and safety reasons but all my grey water is going to the boundry drainage ditch. I say it will atract rats ( it sure has attracted small birds) but hubby says the food particles and suchlike will be to small to atract the furry vermin and you have rats every where and and and.
Are there any regs that you lot know of or is it usually just run off the land like that? I plan to grow lots of water cress in the ditch so the water gets reasonable clean before it reaches the stream but I dont want to get caught out if I am in breach of the law. Now is the time to fix it if it is a problem.

I am deeling with this process as we speak. The rules regarding waist water has been changing continually for a few years. Now we have to use raised perculation areas which takes the waist from the treatment plant. Around the perculation area there has to be a french drain to take excess water away to a running water course. The water in the stream has to be tested for phosphates and flow rate before we may be allowed to discharge treated waist into it. This only applies to a new build and the vast majority of older dwellings in Ireland are not subject to this. It could not be applied retrospectively to them. In regard to grey water. Rain from the roof etc does not need treatment before it is discharged into the stream all other waist has to be treated first. I hope this helps but as I say, these rules can only apply to builds that require planning permission and not existing dwellings, unless the pipe is your addition to an old system. In which case you may be told to remove it.

we bought the house as new built but the planning for it was granted in 2002 I think and things have changed since then but the builder got away with puting a septic tank instead of a treatment system because that was what the plans were aproved with The grey water as well I supose, but it buggs me, esp. as we cant get him (%%$$&*&*^&%) to come back and finish the septic tank and fill in the great child danger hole with large amounts of cold water and crumbly sides in my back garden
just something else on my list to do

building it is one thing but getting them to finish it is another, we waited best part of a year to get the paths completed, but as he wasnt getting paid till he did finish, i didnt press him to hard.
we have a treatment unit, had a few problems with the exit pipe to the ditch silting up, which ended up with me having to beg, borrow and steal 70 drain rods, which was fun, nothing worse than sewage backing up....
