Fishing report ( freshwater )

Actually managed to do a bit  Very Happy  instead of running around in circles trying to catch up on the endless jobs I should have done ages ago .
Found a small lake which looked unfishable due to reeds growing all around the edge but their roots were quite tightly matted so it was possible , if a little scary , to walk out on them almost to the waters edge . Used a spoon and caught 4 pike in a couple of hours . Only jacks between about 1 1/2 and 2 1/2 lbs but good sport and quite nice eating ( but not my favourite I must admit ) .
Also got up to Loch Easky after brown trout . Caught 6 , lost 2 and missed a few good knocks . Again , small fish --- the loch is full of them but 1/2 lb would be considered large --- but 4 on a plate made a very nice snack .
Those were also on spinner -- mepps nbr 5 I think it was . The original hooks were a bit too large so I replaced them with smaller ones and also broke off the red beads to allow space to wrap a bit of lead around the shaft to give better casting distance .
Is there a min size limit for brownies ? I couldn't find one amongst all the other numerous regs on the Fisheries Board site .
FWIW I wouldn't normally kill small fish but , as I said , there are loads of them between 5 and 7 or 8" and I haven't heard of anything bigger coming out of there .

there is suppose to be some small lakes near easkey that are suppose to be quite good did you ever fish them
blowin

Correction to prev post -- the trout were taken on mepps nbr 1 , the pike on nbr 5 . Sorry ! That shows how often I get out these days .
Lofty --  there are 4 or 5 small lakes just to the South of Easky Loch . You can see 3 from the road , the others are further back .
I have seen good sized trout rising in the southermost visible one but have only ever caught small ones there . My trouble is that I can't cast a fly any distance and there is too much weed to spin effectively in summer . The midge can also be a bloomin nuisance .
The Southern lake which is further back is reputed to hold bigger fish but you need to watch out for concealed holes in the bog and undercut bank .
I am only 5 miles from there so if you fancy meeting up that would be great .

i think i read it in trout lakes of ireland about the smaller lakes around easkey i certanly wouldnt mind giving it a go at some stage i have a float tube which sounds like it would be ideal for one of those lakes

a float tube

What's that then ? Not the thing like an inner tube with waders attached by any chance ? I have wanted one for ages but they are a bit over budget ( or , perhaps , just ridiculously expensive over here ).
lofty

you need a pair of chest waders and flippers to start the float tube costs around 80 euro roughly. Great for the small inacessible lakes in the mountains. I used them mainly in canada where they are very popular

I am having trouble in visualising this thing . Not sure why you would need the waders -- I thought they were permanently attached to the tube . But then I have never actually seen one .
This thread inspired me to go down to the lakes this pm . They look very promising but definitely too much weed to spin from the margins without getting snagged on every cast . Only good thing is that it is soft stringy weed so you don't lose your tackle .
Fly fishing is tricky because the bank rises steeply .
Bottom is sound -- gravel rather than boggy -- so you could wade out but there appears to be a sudden drop-off in unpredictable places .
I wouldn't say it is worth travelling a long distance to fish there but if you fancy a go at it maybe we can get Phil and Camile along , have a bit of a laugh  ( can't remeber how to spell " craik " ) .
phil

Ill have a go at that.
lofty

you dont know the name of those lakes by any chance
Camile

Hello,

If the timing is right you can count me in too ..

Don't know their names , sorry . Am sure they will have one but I think it would be local and the locals just refer to them as the small lakes beside Loch Easky . No specific names are given on the large scale Ord Survey maps I use .
Interesting that they contain so much stringy/floating weed whereas Loch Easky has none . For that same reason I suspect they might contain pike , which Loch Easky apparently doesn't .
If you are a bit of a specialist / adventurist fisherman there is reputedly a lake high on the hill behind ( W of ) Loch Talt which is also v close to here . It takes about 3 hours to walk to it , assuming that you are in better condition than I am !   Laughing  Talt holds the scarce Arctic Char . The higher one holds an almost unique species called , I think , the gizzard trout --- because it has adapted a gizzard like chooks have in order to process the scarce food source of snails . That lake has an almost mystical local rep but , again , I have heard of a few who have got lost on the way up there but none who have returned with anything any bigger than a tall story !  Laughing
Alternatively just behind ( NE ) of us are the " secret " lakes . They are know as " Tullevilla " and I think by the same name on Ord Survey maps .  Less than 3/4 a mile from the nearest vehicular acces but the better part of an hour's walk over the  bog . Nice Bilberries to be found on the journey , and stunning but sparce upland scenery , which contributes to the delay .Supposed to hold big fish but I have only caught tiddlers . Probably my lack of expertise !
Anyway --  If it looks like a few are up for chucking a fly or spinner I'll put up a separate thread under "events " and see if any of us are psychologically capable of dealing with such a degree of organisation since we have become accustumed to the way of life over here  Wink  Laughing

OK . does anyone remember who is the current Social Secreatary  Question
Time to pick on one of our new recruits , methinks  Wink  . Perhaps this cr@p landline speed is part of a conspiracy to minimise bullying .

You are the secretary Blowin !

i have been up at those lakes above talt a good few times. There are two worth talking about one with fish around 7 to 11 inches the other with much far fewer but alot bigger fish. The best i have had is just over two pounds from one of these lakes, but boy did i have to work for it.

They would count as monsters in most waters around here . Except for the ones which got away , of course !
What were you using ?
Ps I had found names for the small lakes on Ord Survey . Will go find it and post up .

Nope I am not . I am absolutely certain that someone else got nominated after I lost the job . Don't argue or I will get my mate in Admin to nominate you again . Then nothing will happen ever again !  Wink  Laughing

I'm sure he is . He now sleeps on my bed so I have to sleep in his because there is no room on mine . So I can't allow you to sleep atop of him because that would be in the same bed as MOH and that really wouldn't do !  Shocked  Laughing
Does this forum allow us to go off-topic like this ?
Camile

I won't argue then  Sad  Shocked

Good one Camile.

Just checked on the O/S map and found that the little lochs just south of loch Easky do in fact have individual names . The northern one is Rumduff. That has deep water close to the edge in places but , as I mentioned , is full of weed which comes up to within inches of the surface . It is soft stringy stuff so you don’t lose gear but it makes spinning impractical .
Below that is Mullaun . Less weed and one of the few around here which has a bed of water lilies . I have seen good fish rising in there .
Further back from the road are lochs Nabrackmore and Gal . There are some quite treacherous holes under the heather around the banks of Nabrackmore . I have never got as far as Gal . It isn't a huge distance but is a tiring walk thru the coarse grass and heather .

I hadn't noticed that google ad !  Evil or Very Mad   What on earth are their dirty little minds thinking about  Evil or Very Mad  . I mean , Bref and I were just beginning to get along nicely so why would we want to meet anyone else thru a feckin agency !  Question  Laughing
lofty
