fishing for pollack

The mate who takes me out on his boat is a very modest but very skilled fisherman . He consistently lands considerably more and much bigger fish than I do --- even when I use what appear to be exactly the same rigs and methods as he does . It has become a standing joke !
Key tips when using jelly worm :- drop right down to the bottom and retrieve REALLY slowly right back up to the surface . Do not under any circumstances strike or even change the rate of retrieve when you feel a very gentle "plucking " which could easily be confused with snagging a bit of weed . When the fish eventually takes it will go into a strong initial dive and hook itself .
And equally importantly , use as long a leader as you can handle ( between weight and worm ) . 12 to 14 ft seems like too much to deal with because you will have to handline the fish in but the catch rate is significantly better than on the easier to use 6 to 9 ft leader .  Wink
Don't tell him I have passed that on . It must have taken him ages to figure it out and it has taken me over 2 years of trying to copy him to realise those fine points of detail .
